About the position

The Public Safety Emergency Call Taker I position is essential for maintaining public safety by managing incoming emergency and non-emergency calls. Call Takers are responsible for entering and transmitting critical information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system while providing necessary instructions to callers in distress. This role requires strong listening skills, the ability to work under pressure, and familiarity with emergency protocols to ensure effective communication and response during emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Receive incoming calls via the 9-1-1 system's emergency or non-emergency lines.
• Enter and transmit appropriate emergency information and codes into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
• Provide pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions to distressed or irate callers.
• Record data accurately in the CAD system.
• Familiarize with emergency and dispatch protocols to ensure safe and effective response.
• Exhibit highly skilled listening ability to ascertain the nature of assistance required from callers.
• Work under pressure in a secured, windowless office environment.

Requirements

• Ability to quickly and accurately type/enter information in the CAD system.
• Strong listening skills to understand emotional and distraught callers.
• Tolerance to work under pressure in a high-stress environment.
• Ability to perform tasks requiring reaching, fingering, grasping, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions.
