About the position

The Public Safety Officer I position at Nassau Community College involves performing routine security duties to protect the college campus, buildings, and grounds. The role requires judgment in safeguarding property and responding to emergencies under general supervision. The officer will conduct periodic tours, ensure security measures are in place, and assist with various tasks related to campus safety.

Responsibilities

  • Periodically tour buildings, grounds, or other designated areas to ensure security.
  • Turn key at each watch clock station at specified time intervals.
  • Report any unusual conditions to supervisors and/or proper authorities.
  • Perform a variety of unskilled tasks including operating elevators, custodial work, answering telephones, and directing the public.
  • Question unauthorized personnel and check vehicles entering public grounds.
  • Operate a motor vehicle, as required.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York may be required.
  • Background investigation prior to appointment.
  • Possession of New York State registration as a security guard issued by the New York State Department of State.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of buildings and grounds safety and security precautions.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • Ability to learn and enforce security procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to learn the layout of an area to be guarded.
  • Ability to perform routine, unskilled maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
