About the position

The Public Safety Shift Supervisor oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the police and emergency communications services within the City of Escondido. This role involves supervising dispatch personnel, ensuring adherence to policies, and maintaining high service levels for emergency response. The supervisor also participates in dispatch activities as needed and is responsible for training, performance evaluations, and addressing operational issues.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coordinates, and participates in the daily activities of the City's communications center for police and emergency call handling activities.
  • Schedules, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of subordinates on an assigned shift.
  • Operates all communications equipment including computer terminals to access various law enforcement systems.
  • Prepares performance evaluations and counsels employees regarding work performance.
  • Updates training manuals and develops new training procedures.
  • Supervises and conducts or directs initial and ongoing training of Public Safety Dispatch personnel.
  • Ensures that Public Safety Dispatchers adhere to department policies and procedures.
  • Assists in identifying and correcting operational problems and procedures.
  • Ensures all emergency equipment is in working order and contacts repair personnel as needed.
  • Assists in providing recordings of phone and radio audio to courts, investigators, attorneys or others.
  • Assists in investigating and resolving complaints from citizens and City personnel regarding Public Safety Dispatchers.
  • Assists the public by answering questions and routing requests for service to other City departments.
  • Attends daily patrol briefing as communication staff representative and serves as liaison to Patrol Supervisors and staff.
  • Assists in staffing the Emergency Operating Center when activated.
  • Performs special projects as requested by administration.
  • Conducts research and prepares reports as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent; college level coursework in emergency service communications, law enforcement, supervision or closely related field is desirable.
  • Four years of progressively responsible public safety dispatch experience; experience in leading or supervising the work of others is desirable.
  • Must possess a California Police Officer Standard of Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Complaint/Dispatcher Certificate.
  • Must possess an original typing/keyboarding certificate issued within the last twelve months at a net rate speed of at least 40 words per minute.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
