About the position

The Public Safety Telecommunicator plays a crucial role in the Campus Public Safety department by receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls in a 911 Call Center. This position is responsible for gathering essential information, dispatching appropriate emergency units, and providing critical instructions to callers until help arrives. The role requires effective communication, quick decision-making, and the ability to operate various communication systems to ensure the safety and security of the campus community.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and responds to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints
  • Determines the type of emergency service or action required and responds accordingly
  • Monitors and dispatches appropriate emergency response providers such as police, fire services, and emergency medical services
  • Utilizes radio, telephone, and computerized equipment to dispatch specific assistance units
  • Obtains, verifies, assesses, and records all necessary information to assist callers
  • Operates automatic number identification (ANI) and automatic location information (ALI) systems
  • Monitors fire and burglar alarms and dispatches units when necessary
  • Activates emergency alert systems as needed
  • Accesses foreign language interpreter services for non-English speaking callers
  • Provides first aid or CPR instructions until professional medical assistance arrives
  • Gives precautionary instructions to ensure personal safety pending assistance
  • Refers non-emergency situations to appropriate agencies
  • Relays information to field units via radio or mobile data terminal
  • Maintains communication with responding units and relays confidential information
  • Answers questions about routine regulations and policies
  • Maintains and updates records in the NCIC and SCIC systems
  • Prepares and maintains essential records and files
  • Inspects fire alarm and circuit indicator panels for functionality
  • Makes minor adjustments and repairs to communications equipment
  • Learns to utilize various electronic and manual recording systems.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience in receiving, transmitting, and relaying video display and/or radio messages, including emergency assistance requests
  • Training and certification by the Office of Emergency Telecommunications Services (OETS) as required by NJAC 17:24-2 and NJAC 17:24-3.

Nice-to-haves

  • New Jersey driver's license.
