About the position

AMMA Transit Planning, Inc. is seeking a Public Transit Community Engagement & Planning Support Specialist to join our dynamic, small consulting firm dedicated to shaping public transportation services at both community and regional levels. This part-time position, which requires a commitment of 75% or more of full-time hours, is based in Riverside, CA, and offers the potential for full-time employment. The role presents a unique opportunity to work with clients across the Western United States, engaging in various projects that influence public transit systems and community engagement strategies. In this position, you will lead public outreach and engagement efforts, designing public input plans that assess transportation needs and presenting these plans to clients. You will also implement market research strategies to gather insights from both public transit riders and non-riders, ensuring that community voices are heard and considered in transportation planning. Your responsibilities will include conducting qualitative public participation engagements with project stakeholders and the broader community, as well as designing and implementing quantitative public input opportunities, such as online surveys, to extract valuable data. You will document input and develop written findings that highlight transportation needs, gaps, and opportunities, particularly focusing on qualitative public comments. Additionally, you will manage public meetings and advisory committee activities, developing and conducting workshops, public hearings, and preparing meeting agendas. You will maintain databases and contact lists for effective dissemination of information and oversee the creation of promotional materials for meetings. Your role will also involve contributing to planning report development, where you will provide written analyses and manage the compilation of quantitative transit performance data for quarterly reporting. As part of your responsibilities, you will assist in proposal development, contributing to both the content and preparation of proposals, and participating in proposal interviews. You will also play a key role in website management, assisting with the development of project websites and maintaining AMMA's website by curating content and interacting with web developers. This position offers flexible hours and a range of benefits, including full health, vision, and dental coverage, as well as two weeks of starting vacation plus the Christmas/New Year's week. Compensation is based on qualifications, with a full-time equivalent salary ranging from $95,000 to $125,000.

Responsibilities

  • Design public input plans regarding transportation needs and present to clients, revising as appropriate.
  • Implement market research strategies to assess public transit rider and non-rider viewpoints.
  • Conduct qualitative public participation engagements with project stakeholders and the broader community.
  • Design and implement quantitative public input opportunities, including preparing online surveys and extracting data.
  • Document input and develop written findings of transportation needs, gaps, and opportunities, particularly for qualitative public comment.
  • Participate in framing recommendations based on public input.
  • Develop and conduct meetings, workshops, and public hearings, including preparing agendas and contributing to meeting content.
  • Maintain databases and contact lists for dissemination of information.
  • Develop promotional materials for meetings and oversee graphics/creative work on these materials.
  • Write up meeting input, framing themes and findings.
  • Contribute written analyses and other materials for planning reports, including both quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Manage the compilation of quantitative transit performance data for quarterly reporting.
  • Contribute to proposal preparation, both in content and development.
  • Participate in proposal interviews.
  • Assist with the development of project websites on selective commercial platforms.
  • Prepare and curate content for project websites and maintain AMMA's website.

Requirements

  • Community engagement experience and willingness to talk with the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Strong writing experience.
  • Familiarity with Word and Excel is required; InDesign is optional.
  • Familiarity with Survey Monkey, Mailchimp, PublicInput, or comparable platforms is desirable but optional.
  • Social media literacy is desirable.
  • Familiarity with the public transportation industry is optional but desirable.
  • Living in Southern California or in/near the Inland Empire is required.
  • Spanish language capability is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public transportation planning or community engagement.
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Experience with graphic design or promotional material development.
