About the position

The City of Hampton, VA is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Civil Engineering Technician within the Development Services Center. This role is designed to provide complex technical and civil engineering support to the Public Works Senior Civil Engineer. The technician will work under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences to ensure effective project execution. The position requires a strong foundation in civil engineering principles and practices, as well as the ability to analyze and review projects for compliance with established standards. The technician will be involved in various aspects of project design and will play a crucial role in supporting the overall objectives of the Development Services Center. In this position, the technician will be responsible for collaborating with other engineering professionals and stakeholders to ensure that projects are designed and executed in accordance with local regulations and standards. The role may also involve fieldwork, where the technician will assess project sites and gather data necessary for project planning and execution. The technician will be expected to maintain accurate records and documentation related to project activities, and to communicate effectively with team members and external partners. The incumbent may also be considered essential personnel during emergency situations as directed by the City Manager, which may require working long hours and adapting to unusual schedules. Responsibilities

  • Provide complex technical and civil engineering support to the Public Works Senior Civil Engineer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible, full-time equivalent engineering experience in project design and review/analysis.
  • Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation certification as a combined administrator or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  • Ability to pass a background check related to the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering is preferred.
