About the position
The Public Works Equipment Operator position at Deschutes County involves performing a variety of road maintenance activities that include both manual labor tasks and the operation of light to heavy automotive and construction equipment. The operator will be responsible for the care, maintenance, and safe operation of various hand-operated power tools such as chainsaws and jackhammers. This role requires the ability to understand and carry out both verbal and written instructions effectively, as well as to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public. The operator will work with a range of medium to large-sized trucks, tractors, trailers, and other equipment, manipulating auxiliary controls as necessary. The position is crucial for ensuring the quality and safety of the County's road system, which spans approximately 900 miles. The operator will also be expected to perform general equipment care and maintenance tasks, maintain records, and adhere to occupational safety precautions. This role is not just about operating machinery; it also involves working collaboratively in a team environment, interacting positively and professionally with the public, and practicing safe driving habits. The job is designed to support the overall mission of the Deschutes County Road Department, which is to maintain and improve the transportation system for all users.

Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
- Experience and skills in heavy equipment operation.
- Ability to perform general equipment care and maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
