About the position

The Public Works Laborer position at the City of Goddard, Kansas, is responsible for operating and maintaining water distribution and sewer collection systems. This full-time, non-exempt role requires the ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodations, including on-call rotations and potential overtime during emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of equipment including trucks, backhoes, tractors, lawnmowers, and more in various weather conditions.
  • Utilize hand and power tools and maintain equipment.
  • Inspect and restore equipment fluid levels and report necessary repairs.
  • Assist with excavation projects and locate leaks and utility lines.
  • Collect and complete daily schedules and report work to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and interact with citizens at the City brush pile.
  • Perform minor building and equipment maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Assist in the setup of City events and road maintenance during snow/ice conditions.
  • Assist in mowing and maintenance of public right-of-way and property.
  • Perform minor concrete repair work and maintain city shop and grounds.
  • Assist in the installation of seasonal decorations and banners.
  • Be on-call at all hours and participate in on-call rotations with other Public Works employees.
  • Perform water and sewer utility locates and read water meters.
  • Monitor, repair, and maintain City water wells and water tower.
  • Install new water service and fire hydrants and monitor for leaks.
  • Inspect and repair sewer lines and monitor for sewer backups.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment and tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to perform physical labor and work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with citizens and staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public works or utility maintenance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of water and sewer systems is a plus.
