About the position
The Public Works Technician is responsible for performing manual labor and operating various departmental equipment under direct supervision. This role involves a variety of tasks related to maintenance and repair of public infrastructure, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and supporting public events.
Responsibilities
- Operate equipment such as backhoes, jackhammers, and lawn mowers in compliance with safety regulations.
- Mow and trim assigned property; remove brush, tree limbs, and leaves.
- Clean alleys and right-of-ways; trim hedges and sidewalks.
- Plant and fertilize trees, shrubs, and flowers as directed.
- Perform cleaning tasks in assigned area, including sweeping and emptying trash receptacles.
- Repair sidewalks and other concrete areas; maintain roadway curbs and crosswalks.
- Perform minor building repairs, including electrical and plumbing tasks.
- Assist in sodding and landscaping property; assist with storm clean up.
- Clean and repair drainage structures; lay pipelines.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of roadway traffic signs.
- Direct and control traffic at work sites.
- Attend safety classes and comply with company safety policies.
Requirements
- Prefer six months of related experience.
- High school diploma or GED, or specialized vocational training.
- Must have a valid state driver's license and meet minimum driving standards.
- Basic math skills including addition and subtraction.
- Ability to read, write, and speak simple sentences.
