About the position

The Publication Technical Content Writer with 3D CAD will be responsible for creating and managing technical documentation and illustrations for the automotive domain. This role requires a deep understanding of technical writing principles, as well as the ability to translate complex engineering concepts into clear, concise content that is accessible to various audiences. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in information development, with at least four years of experience in technical writing and a minimum of two years specifically focused on writing, editing, and technical illustration within the automotive or truck support sectors. In this position, the writer will develop customer service documentation, ensuring that all materials meet deadlines and are produced with high accuracy. The candidate will need to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities while collaborating with various stakeholders, including technical and non-technical Subject Matter Experts. Strong communication skills are essential, as the writer will be required to gather information independently and interpret various source materials, such as engineering drawings, procedural mark-ups, and maintenance instructions. The role also involves adapting to changes in production and editorial processes, as well as working within an Agile environment. The writer will utilize tools such as Arbortext, XML, and Adobe Illustrator to create draft illustrations that support procedural and descriptive text. A solid understanding of structured authoring principles, particularly DITA, is crucial for success in this role. Additionally, familiarity with CAD software, specifically Unigraphix/NX, will be beneficial for navigating and utilizing these programs in the creation of articles and publications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage technical documentation and illustrations for the automotive domain.

  • Independently gather information from Subject Matter Experts to write technical service content.
  • Interpret various source materials, including engineering drawings and maintenance instructions.
  • Adapt to production and editorial changes in an Agile environment.
  • Utilize Arbortext, XML, and Adobe Illustrator to create supporting illustrations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure content accuracy and relevance.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • More than 4 years of experience in technical writing or information development.
  • At least 2 years of experience in writing/editing and technical illustration in the automotive domain.
  • Hands-on experience with developing customer service documentation.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex engineering concepts to various audiences.
  • Experience with service tools and specifications used for vehicle servicing.
  • Good understanding of Agile environment and writing principles.
  • Strong MS Office skills, including Word, Excel, SharePoint, and OneNote.
  • Experience with Arbortext Editor or equivalent XML editing software.
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or In-Design.
  • Understanding of structured authoring (DITA).
  • Some experience with CAD software, particularly Unigraphix/NX.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous automotive or dealership hands-on experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Knowledge of automotive system theory, including electronic and electrical fundamentals, mechanical procedures, and modern automotive systems.
