About the position

The Publications Sales Manager (PSM) at the American Physical Society is responsible for achieving revenue targets and ensuring customer satisfaction for institutional and consortia accounts globally. This role involves managing a team of four Publications Account Executives (PAEs) and focuses on sales of journal subscriptions and related products, including the transition to Open Access. The PSM will provide strategic guidance, collaborate with various departments, and foster a supportive sales culture aligned with APS's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of four PAEs to manage a global list of accounts and maximize renewals and new customer acquisitions.
  • Plan and implement training and improvement exercises for the team.
  • Understand APS journals and products to effectively communicate value propositions to customers.
  • Deliver accurate and timely sales reports and forecasts to the Global Sales Director.
  • Ensure accurate use of Salesforce and other business systems throughout the sales cycle.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of business policies and processes.
  • Translate APS' publications strategy into clear objectives and execute plans to achieve organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on outreach activities to promote APS products and services.
  • Support the creation of Open Access proposals and negotiations with the team.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for the development of new business and products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or ten years of equivalent work experience in licensing, sales, or scholarly publications.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in institutional sales and licensing of scholarly publications, preferably in STEM fields.
  • Advanced knowledge of scholarly communication and academic library markets.
  • Proven leadership and people management experience.
  • Self-motivated with a strong drive for results and ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience with Salesforce and demonstrated skills in relationship building and customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teams.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the physical sciences or related areas of STEM.
  • Familiarity with trends in research communities and the journals publishing industry.
