About the position

The Publicist at Wesleyan University Press is responsible for promoting the press and its authors, managing publicity for approximately 18 new titles annually through various media channels. This role involves developing media contacts, creating publicity materials, and overseeing social media efforts, while also supervising student workers and collaborating with the Marketing Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Identify the best and most appropriate audience for new titles.
  • Research, organize, and develop media lists and contacts.
  • Research and write publicity materials.
  • Develop and maintain the press database of media contacts.
  • Generate digital proof and review copy mailings.
  • Arrange meetings with media editors and make publicity visits as appropriate.
  • Manage press nominations for book awards.
  • Work closely with authors to maintain consistent messaging.
  • Conduct meetings to pitch author events.
  • Design and schedule social media posts.
  • Travel to exhibits, author signings, and conferences, managing special author events and book displays.
  • Organize book signings and other author events.
  • Maintain database management systems containing Wesleyan University Press information and publishing industry contacts.
  • Oversee social media posts and press blog.
  • Meet with Marketing Manager monthly for planning and support.
  • Assist Director and Marketing Manager with miscellaneous marketing requests.
  • Order office supplies and pay relevant invoices.
  • Oversee student workers within the Publicity department.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of publicity in the publishing industry.
  • Knowledge of design software.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Possess desktop computer skills including the fundamental use of internet and Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage diverse groups and build networks.
  • Effective communication skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
  • Available for occasional overnight travel within the US.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency with database management systems.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and FileMaker.
  • Knowledge of poetry, music, and dance.
  • Knowledge of content creation for social media and blog posts.
  • Experience with scheduling social media.
  • Experience supervising student workers.
