About the position

The Publicist role at CNN involves supporting strategic publicity efforts for political news and programming from the Washington, DC bureau. This position requires a fast-paced communications expert who can collaborate with various teams, manage public relations campaigns, and maintain accurate information about journalists and events. The role offers the opportunity to work closely with top journalists and contribute to CNN's future.

Responsibilities

  • Support the strategic publicity efforts for CNN's political news and programming, including drafting and distributing pitches around editorial reporting, talent, and transcripts.
  • Research and pitch creative placements, interviews, stories, and speaking opportunities for CNN journalists.
  • Coordinate and strategize with teams across the division and wider communications team as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate anchor bios, headshots, and fact sheets about journalists, editors, and executives.
  • Maintain press lists and create targeted press lists based on bookings and news events.
  • Partner on internal events and employee engagement activities. Support event planning and execution for industry and company events.
  • Collaborate with the department to ensure all documents are maintained and distributed in a timely manner with key stakeholders.
  • Support Weekend Programming team as backup support for colleagues' time off.
  • Help manage PR campaigns for assigned projects - spanning CNN linear and digital - from development to implementation, with oversight/guidance from the wider team.
  • Regularly track media coverage and gather media recap reports.

Requirements

  • 4-6 years of experience, preferably with a media, news or public relations/publicity organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and stellar attention to detail.
  • Strong, polished interpersonal skills and ability to work with talent and executives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interest in and understanding of news and politics with excellent judgement.
  • Existing relationships with press covering media, news or politics preferred.
  • Public relations agency experience preferred.
  • Prior administrative experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative and team-player.
  • Four-year college degree preferred.
  • High-level proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Slack.
