About the position

The Purchasing Manager at Ash Grove Cement plays a crucial role in overseeing and managing the purchasing and inventory control activities within the organization. This position is responsible for ensuring that the necessary supplies and materials are procured efficiently to support the operations of the plant. The Purchasing Manager will work closely with various department managers to assess material requirements and will conduct purchasing activities to meet those needs effectively. This role requires a strong focus on safety, as the Purchasing Manager must promote and adhere to all plant safety guidelines while managing the purchasing process. In addition to managing the purchasing activities, the Purchasing Manager will supervise storeroom employees, assign job responsibilities, and ensure that inventory levels are maintained at specified levels. The role involves negotiating with vendors to secure cost-effective purchasing transactions while maximizing quality and customer service. The Purchasing Manager will also be responsible for managing the verification and approval process for purchasing activities, ensuring that all purchase orders are properly signed and authorized. The position requires the use of various software tools, including Bentley for maintaining records of purchasing activities and Avantis for managing inventory and equipment. The Purchasing Manager will participate in plant programs and meetings, lead the Inventory Leadership team, and prepare reports regarding purchasing activities. This role is essential for maintaining compliance with company guidelines and ensuring that purchasing policies are followed for both procurement and inventory management. The Purchasing Manager will also provide support and training to the Accounts Payable clerk as needed, contributing to the overall efficiency of the purchasing process.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Establish, communicate, and assign job responsibilities to storeroom employees.
  • Supervise and execute the purchase of supplies and materials for operation and maintain a specified level of inventory in the storeroom.
  • Collaborate with other department managers to discuss material and supply requirements.
  • Conduct purchasing activities to meet material requirements.
  • Review and correct problematic invoices.
  • Process and submit purchase orders for filing; monitor status of open purchase orders.
  • Negotiate with vendors to achieve cost-effective purchasing transactions while maximizing quality, customer service, and desired delivery times.
  • Manage inventory and equipment in the Avantis database to ensure part numbers are accurate and inventory records are updated.
  • Manage the verification and approval process and receive reports.
  • Maintain updated records of daily purchasing activities through Bentley software.
  • Participate in plant programs and meetings.
  • Head Inventory Leadership team for review of stocking levels and inventory management.
  • Manage the Purchasing process per Company guidelines.
  • Monitor service vendors' contractual and insurance requirements to meet established compliance levels through Avetta.
  • Prepare reports regarding purchasing activities.
  • Ensure that purchase orders are signed and authorized by required personnel.
  • Manage invoices and transactions to prevent the occurrence of Received Not Invoiced (RNI) outside the normal transaction lead time.
  • Mandate and ensure that purchasing policies are followed for both procurement and inventory management.
  • Provide support and training for the Accounts Payable clerk where applicable.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Minimum 4 year - Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field.
  • Preferred certifications: C.P.M., CPIM or CPSM.
  • Minimum 5 years experience purchasing in a similar position at an industrial manufacturer or in a related industry.
