About the position

The Purchasing Manager for Supply Chain Management at UC San Diego Health is a leadership role responsible for overseeing purchasing operations across a multi-site healthcare network. This position involves strategic planning, direction, and leadership to ensure the procurement of goods and services aligns with the organization's operational and financial goals. The Purchasing Manager will work closely with other directors to optimize processes, mentor staff, and ensure compliance with procurement policies and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategies for obtaining best value for goods and services in support of the healthcare network.
  • Monitor, control, and improve core departmental processes including transaction workflow and budget management.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop staff with a focus on succession planning.
  • Serve as the enterprise-wide expert regarding purchasing best practices and compliance considerations.
  • Validate purchase requisitions and participate in developing and soliciting bids.
  • Analyze and evaluate supplier proposals and negotiate prices and terms.
  • Maintain professional relationships with customers and vendors, ensuring compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Conduct key business reviews and evaluate supplier reliability and performance.
  • Represent the organization as the primary Purchasing authority and provide advice on purchasing matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, healthcare administration, or a related focus; or equivalent experience/training.
  • Seven years of relevant sourcing, contracting, and/or purchasing experience in a healthcare organization.
  • Proven experience as a leader in sourcing/contracting/purchasing functions.
  • Exceptional professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Expert-level knowledge of purchasing functions within MMIS and/or ERP applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Purchasing certification from a recognized professional organization or academic program.
  • Experience working with key revenue-generating hospital departments such as Perioperative Services and Imaging Services.
