About the position

The Purchasing Manager at Gerresheimer's Chicago Heights facility is responsible for overseeing the purchasing and storeroom functions, which include the procurement of raw materials, supplies, parts, and utilities. This role involves managing the entire purchasing process, ensuring that all activities align with company policies and procedures while considering total cost, quality, and delivery timelines. The Purchasing Manager will handle day-to-day purchasing activities, coordinate with suppliers, and issue purchase orders to procure necessary commodities and services. Additionally, this position plays a crucial role in strategic sourcing initiatives, managing contractual issues, and maintaining long-term supply agreements. The Purchasing Manager is also tasked with ensuring proper inventory levels for raw materials and storeroom supplies, identifying and eliminating waste within the organization, and ensuring timely and accurate receipt of incoming materials. This role requires the manager to expedite orders when necessary and ensure compliance with OSHA/EPA standards for the storage of chemicals and flammables. The manager will also maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and participate in year-end physical inventory and month-end close processes. In addition to these responsibilities, the Purchasing Manager will organize the workloads of assigned staff, delegate responsibilities, and supervise day-to-day operations to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the purchasing process. This position requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work with minimal supervision and handle pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate the purchasing order process considering total cost, quality, delivery, and policy/procedure.
  • Handle day-to-day purchasing activities with suppliers and coordinate with other plants or corporate as necessary.
  • Issue purchase orders to procure commodities, supplies, and services from supply resources.
  • Assist in strategic sourcing initiatives and coordination of contractual issues, long-term supply agreements, and annual contracts.
  • Maintain raw material and storeroom inventories, ensuring proper stocking levels and availability of critical spare parts.
  • Identify and eliminate waste within the organization.
  • Ensure timely and accurate receipt of incoming materials and services, expediting orders when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA/EPA standards for the storage of chemicals and flammables, maintaining SDS sheets and program.
  • Ensure vendors meet expectations of quality and delivery.
  • Participate in year-end physical inventory and month-end close processes.
  • Organize workloads of assigned staff, delegate responsibilities, and supervise day-to-day operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent; College degree preferred.
  • Prior work experience in a purchasing/buyer position in a manufacturing environment, preferably in an ISO certified facility.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand instructions in English and maintain logs and records.
  • Ability to perform arithmetical calculations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience using ERP systems such as SAP.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
