About the position

Stellar Industries, Inc. is seeking a dedicated Purchasing Manager to lead its Purchasing department in Garner, Iowa. This role is pivotal in establishing the strategic direction of the Purchasing team and ensuring effective coordination among team members. The Purchasing Manager will be responsible for overseeing the procurement of materials, equipment, machinery, and supplies necessary for the company's operations. This position requires a proactive approach to sourcing and supplier management, ensuring that the company meets its operational needs efficiently and cost-effectively. The Purchasing Manager will direct and coordinate the activities of personnel engaged in buying, maintaining close collaboration with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure timely execution of sourcing activities. This includes securing and analyzing quotations, negotiating pricing and terms with suppliers, and evaluating supplier capabilities through interviews and facility visits. The role also involves analyzing market conditions and supplier performance metrics, which will be communicated to stakeholders to inform decision-making processes. In addition to procurement responsibilities, the Purchasing Manager will lead supplier development initiatives, participate in continuous improvement projects, and execute cost-saving strategies to meet annual goals. The position also includes supervisory responsibilities, such as interviewing and hiring staff, overseeing training, and ensuring that the team operates effectively within the company's safety policies and procedures. The work environment is a blend of professional office settings and manufacturing facilities, requiring adherence to safety protocols while utilizing standard office equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in buying materials, equipment, machinery, and supplies.
  • Maintain close coordination with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure timely execution of product and services sourcing activities.
  • Secure and analyze quotations and negotiate pricing and terms with suppliers.
  • Interview and confer with current and prospective suppliers to determine supply capabilities.
  • Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Develop and present metrics regarding market conditions, pricing, supplier on-time delivery, and quality.
  • Develop and communicate material component forecasts to suppliers.
  • Visit current and potential suppliers' facilities to qualify them as sources.
  • Lead supplier development initiatives.
  • Participate in projects and continuous improvement processes.
  • Interview and hire staff and oversee staff training.
  • Execute cost savings initiatives to meet annual cost savings goals.
  • Develop operating strategies, plans, or procedures.
  • Complete special projects, assignments, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain or other business related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and ERP systems.
  • Knowledge of strategic sourcing methodology and approaches.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with managers and employees at all levels.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in industry procedures, costs, and terms.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently under pressure and react quickly to changing needs of production or customers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to reach logical, responsible, and timely decisions.
