About the position

The Purchasing Manager will play a crucial role in enhancing the profitability and customer satisfaction of our construction company client by ensuring that materials are purchased in a timely manner and at the lowest possible cost. This position requires a strategic approach to vendor management, including coordinating vendor activities and negotiations, as well as analyzing trends in vendor pricing and sales activity to determine the optimal timing for purchases. The Purchasing Manager will be responsible for maintaining accurate purchasing records and ensuring proficiency in computerized purchasing and business systems, including Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel. In addition to purchasing responsibilities, the Purchasing Manager will assist in the preparation and management of the departmental budget, and will be involved in the hiring, training, evaluating, supervising, and terminating of department personnel. The role also includes participation in the Corporate Purchasing Managers Group, where the Purchasing Manager will evaluate existing corporate purchasing policies and recommend necessary changes. Furthermore, the Purchasing Manager will assess existing and potential suppliers, making recommendations for changes as needed, and will devise methods to sell or dispose of dead and slow-moving inventory. Identifying and optimizing common inventories among facilities will also be a key responsibility of this position. This role is essential for ensuring that the company meets its inventory targets and maintains a competitive edge in the market. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in purchasing within the construction industry and will be adept at managing vendor relationships to achieve the best outcomes for the company.

Responsibilities

  • Purchase materials in a timely manner and at the lowest cost
  • Order special products in a timely manner
  • Attain the target for overall inventory turns per year
  • Assist in the preparation and management of the departmental budget
  • Assist in the hiring, training, evaluating, supervising and terminating of the department personnel
  • Coordinate vendor activity and negotiations
  • Analyze trends in vendor pricing and sales activity to determine correct timing of purchases
  • Verify accuracy of computerized purchasing records
  • Maintain proficiency in computerized purchasing/business systems; be literate and functional with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
  • Maintain accurate purchase order prices and vendor cataloging
  • Participate actively in the Corporate Purchasing Managers Group
  • Evaluate existing corporate purchasing policy and recommend changes as needed
  • Evaluate existing and potential suppliers; recommend and implement changes in suppliers
  • Make recommendations on the use of alternate materials
  • Devise and implement methods to sell or dispose of dead and slow moving inventory
  • Identify and optimize common inventories among facilities
  • Training duties as needed

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Purchasing Manager or similar role
  • Strong negotiation skills and vendor management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
  • Ability to analyze trends in vendor pricing and sales activity
  • Experience in the construction industry is preferred
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various departments
