About the position

Xcel Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Python Developer to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN. This full-time position is designed for individuals who are passionate about application and data development, particularly in creating geospatial software for workflow automation. The successful candidate will partner with research organizations to enable research excellence and delivery, supporting research staff in disseminating results through peer-reviewed journals, technical reports, and relevant conferences. The role involves working closely with researchers and project sponsors to capture, understand, integrate, and implement project and security requirements in established programs. As a Python Developer, you will collaborate with a highly diverse and multidisciplinary team that includes photogrammetrists, geographers, mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and engineers. Your responsibilities will encompass research, development, integration, testing, and deployment in areas such as spatial computing, real-time data platforms, and machine intelligence systems. You will also be involved in facilitating, gathering, and documenting user requirements through application design sessions with business customers, ensuring that the developed services and software meet the necessary project and security standards. This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, along with a minimum of 1 year of experience in application design and development, database development, or workflow automation. The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in Python, Git, and PostgreSQL, as well as excellent communication, organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is essential, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with application design and development, database development, or workflow automation development.
  • Proficiency in Python, Git (or some version control), and PostgreSQL.
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3-5 years of experience with application design and development, database development, or workflow automation development.
  • Experience with Docker, C++, CI/CD.
  • Experience with integration of external models and tools for scalability and scheduling such as SLURM or Kubernetes.
  • Experience outlining technical requirements, producing design documents, and coordinating with leadership on design.
