About the position

Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) is a division of BWX Technologies, Inc., a leading innovator in manufacturing and engineering solutions for nuclear applications. The Quality Assurance Engineer - Gage Design position is based in Barberton, OH, and is integral to ensuring the quality and compliance of products and processes within the organization. The role involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at maintaining high standards of quality assurance in the design and implementation of gages for BWXT hardware. The successful candidate will be responsible for resolving quality issues, developing and implementing inspection plans, and participating in or leading audits of internal departments and suppliers. This includes ensuring compliance with customer and internal requirements, conducting shop floor surveillance, and supporting hourly inspection personnel. The engineer will also lead process improvement activities, maintain quality assurance records, and participate in design teams to develop product inspection plans. Analyzing quality trending data to implement product improvement actions and maintaining ISO9000 quality system procedures are also key aspects of this role. Additionally, the engineer will manage corrective action resolution for component processes, design and implement functional gages, prepare capital packages for the purchase of new gages, and support other Quality Engineers with gaging and inspection planning needs. The role requires strong CAD skills for creating models and drawings, as well as solid math and statistical skills, particularly in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. The position is crucial for ensuring that BWXT continues to provide safe and effective nuclear solutions across various sectors, including defense, clean energy, and space exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Resolution of quality issues.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of inspection plans.
  • Participate or lead audits of internal departments and suppliers to assure compliance to customer and internal requirements.
  • Conduct shop floor surveillance to ensure compliance with internal procedures and customer standards.
  • Support hourly inspection personnel and develop inspection technique documentation.
  • Lead process improvement activities.
  • Maintain quality assurance records.
  • Participate on design teams for development of product inspection plans.
  • Analyze quality trending data to implement product improvement actions.
  • Develop and own procedures.
  • Maintain ISO9000 quality system procedures and work instructions.
  • Manage CAPA (corrective action) resolution for component processes.
  • Design and implement functional gages for BWXT hardware.
  • Prepare capital packages for purchase of new gages.
  • Support other Quality Engineers with gaging and inspection planning needs.
  • Develop and maintain Dimensional Inspection Technique sheets (DITS).
  • Create CAD models and drawings.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in engineering or technical field is required.
  • 2 years quality assurance, engineering or manufacturing experience required.
  • CAD software experience.
  • Solid math/statistical skills and knowledgeable in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and print reading.
  • Experience or knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, welding, and assembly preferred but not required.
  • Experience or knowledge of inspection techniques including dimensional inspection, NDE methods such as ultrasound, mag particle inspection, liquid penetrant inspection and/or radiography preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
