About the position

The Quality Control Microbiologist I at Wellington Foods Inc. plays a crucial role in ensuring the microbiological safety and quality of products through rigorous testing and analysis. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing microbiological testing on various samples, including raw materials, in-process products, finished products, water systems, and environmental samples. The primary goal is to verify compliance with established quality requirements and to support the overall quality control processes within the organization. In addition to routine testing, the Quality Control Microbiologist I will conduct tests on air quality and perform microbiological assessments to validate cleaning operations, sanitizing procedures, and process validations. This role requires a strong understanding of microbiological techniques and the ability to monitor and analyze environmental conditions within the plant. The position reports directly to the Quality Control Laboratory Operations Manager, ensuring that all testing and quality control measures align with company standards and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will engage in complex microbiological analyses, assist in method development, validation, and transfer, and maintain accurate records of all testing activities. This position also involves monitoring the performance and calibration of laboratory instruments, maintaining sample logs, and ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs). The Quality Control Microbiologist I will also be involved in special projects and other duties as assigned by the Quality Control Laboratory Operations Manager, contributing to the overall success of the quality control team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological testing on raw materials, in-process products, finished products, stability samples, and water samples.
  • Conduct tests including Total Plate Count, Mold Count, Yeast Count, Coliforms, Enterobacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Verify the effectiveness of cleaning and sanitation using ATP bioluminescence method and standard plating methods.
  • Monitor the environment of the plant, equipment, and employees via quantitative methods and perform investigative test analysis as required.
  • Monitor air quality in the laboratory and manufacturing areas as directed by the Quality Control Laboratory Operations Manager.
  • Perform complex microbiological analysis and assist in method development, validation, and transfer.
  • Monitor the performance and calibration of instruments used in the Microbiological Laboratory.
  • Maintain sample logs to ensure timely testing and tracking of all samples.
  • Maintain accurate test records and logs, testing database, and issue reports required by Management.
  • Help maintain laboratory supplies and order necessary supplies.
  • Comply with applicable Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), and Good Microbiological Practices.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology or a related field such as Biology, Biochemistry, Food Science, or Food Sanitation.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in a Microbiological Laboratory.
  • Experience in microbiology techniques including aseptic technique and sterilization techniques.
  • Good understanding of microbiology test procedures including USP, AOAC, FDA, and other compendial methods.
  • Ability to learn new methods and techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and keep accurate records.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive, results-oriented work ethic.
  • Ability to work on weekends on a rotation basis.
