About the position

The Qualified Service Technician position at Hussmann Corporation involves responding to customer needs for service and maintenance of refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems primarily in supermarkets and convenience stores. The role requires performing routine maintenance, diagnosing issues, and repairing equipment under the guidance of a Master or Lead Service Technician. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining customer relations and ensuring accurate documentation of service activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform prescribed routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and temperature-controlled merchandisers under direction.
  • Assist in preventative maintenance tasks such as compressor changes, leak searching, and coil washing.
  • Acquire knowledge through on-the-job training, including new product development and service bulletins.
  • Complete necessary documents and electronic communication accurately and timely.
  • Utilize a hand-held computer for customer paperwork and invoicing.
  • Maintain and manage truck inventory in an orderly manner and adhere to vehicle maintenance guidelines.
  • Identify and use standard tools of the trade, including refrigerant recovery equipment.
  • Develop and maintain excellent customer relations and articulate equipment malfunctions professionally.
  • Perform service on various refrigeration systems with guidance.
  • Demonstrate understanding of refrigerant properties, sub-cooling, superheat, and airflow.
  • Read and understand temperature and pressure charts.
  • Conduct basic electrical troubleshooting and refrigeration diagnostics.
  • Safely handle refrigerants and hazardous materials.
  • De-ice evaporator coils, replace fan motors, and wash condenser coils as needed.
  • Understand system evacuation, charging, pump down, and defrost processes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required; HVAC-R Technical School Degree preferred.
  • 2 years of field experience or 0 years with Certification from a Technical School for external candidates; 1 year as a General Laborer with completion of OJT & Skills Assessment for internal candidates.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record required.
  • Physical ability to walk distances, climb ladders, and lift/carry objects up to fifty pounds repetitively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented, and highly motivated.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic maintenance tasks and hand tools.
  • Familiarity with HVAC concepts and basic electrical schematics.
  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends as required.
  • Working knowledge of basic refrigeration and/or commercial refrigeration preferred.
  • Epa 608 universal certification required.
  • Superior decision-making ability and paperwork skills.
