About the position

The Quality Control Specialist is responsible for monitoring quality and adherence to specifications for whiskey production across all shifts. This role involves conducting laboratory testing, providing quality training, and ensuring compliance with TTB regulations. The specialist will analyze raw materials and production samples, maintain laboratory equipment, and support production processes to meet quality goals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate and timely analysis of raw materials, production, by-product samples, and any other necessary samples.
  • Perform data entry and analysis to maintain production logs or other data capture tools.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and ensure the reliability of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure sensory routine and training samples are prepared and placed into sensory booths as scheduled.
  • Participate in the Housekeeping and Sanitation Committee and conduct audits as assigned.
  • Document any process deviations in EtQ and report to QC management.
  • Collect and composite samples for analysis by Brown-Forman R&D.
  • Assist in providing quality training for all employees as needed.
  • Participate in Laboratory Housekeeping and Sanitation activities.
  • Assist with Quality Analytical and Systems report generation and other duties as assigned.
  • Work closely with Distillery and By-Product area operators and management in monitoring production processes.
  • Participate in process and product troubleshooting efforts and provide analytical support as requested.
  • Monitor incoming grain quality through grain testing.
  • Monitor the milling process through Sieve analysis.
  • Monitor mash and beer to ensure process control and quality.
  • Monitor the Fermentation process and report any deviations to management.
  • Analyze samples for proof and base loss during still operation.
  • Monitor vat performance through sensory analysis and track vat age and status weekly.
  • Sample, monitor, and report loadout activities to ensure accuracy of distillery yield metrics and TTB reporting requirements.
  • Monitor barrel entry through New Whiskey Analysis and ensure compliance with security protocols.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related science.
  • Quality-related experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Comfortable interacting and troubleshooting in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with current business software including MS Access.
  • Ability to conduct analytical testing by following test methods and accurately interpreting results.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Dependable and able to work in a team environment.
  • Physical capabilities to safely satisfy work requirements, including bending and lifting heavy objects (50+ lbs).
  • Ability to work in a hot/cold, noisy work environment and tolerate exposure to alcohol fumes, carbon dioxide, and grain dust.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the beverage or food industry.
  • At least 2 years of coursework in Chemistry if not a Chemistry Major.
  • Experience with Analytical Instrumentation (HPLC, GC, GC-MS, and NIR).
  • Professional certifications related to Quality.
  • Knowledge of TTB regulations.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control.
