About the position

The Quality Engineer I is a pivotal role within LG Energy Solution Michigan Inc., focusing on the operation and enhancement of the Quality Management System (QMS). This position involves writing and maintaining procedures that support the development of the QMS, ensuring that all quality-related processes align with business, operational, and customer requirements. The Quality Engineer I will lead audits across various departments, providing essential training on QMS practices and spearheading quality improvement projects. This role is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the quality processes that underpin the manufacturing of large lithium-ion polymer batteries and packs for electric vehicles and energy storage applications. In this role, the Quality Engineer I will oversee the effective implementation of the QMS, ensuring compliance with relevant business accreditations. They will maintain the Quality Manuals and Procedures, ensuring that all documentation is current and relevant. The engineer will conduct final inspections for all outgoing shipments, ensuring that products meet the highest quality standards before they reach customers. Additionally, they will organize and manage both internal and external audits, guiding other auditors and ensuring corrective actions are reported and addressed. The Quality Engineer I will also be responsible for creating daily safety and visual inspection reports, reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to prevent non-conformities in products, processes, or systems. They will maintain and repair laboratory machines as necessary, track spare parts, and train new line operators and engineers on quality issues. The role promotes the use of continuous improvement techniques, such as Six-Sigma and Poka-Yoke, to enhance quality processes. Furthermore, the engineer will communicate with regulatory agencies regarding compliance documentation and validation results, recommend resolutions for deviations from established standards, and maintain cleanliness at the work site according to 5S3R standards.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee effective implementation of the QMS, including any business accreditations
  • Maintain the Quality Manuals and Quality Procedures and ensure contents are appropriate for business, operation, and customer requirements
  • Conduct the final inspection for all outgoing shipments
  • Organize and manage internal and external audits and corrective action reporting, including training and guiding other auditors
  • Create daily safety and visual inspection reports to send to HQ
  • Report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to adhere to process and prevent occurrence of any non-conformity relating to product, process, or system
  • Maintain the Standard Operating Procedure content and coordinate the issuing of these documents
  • Review, collect, and analyze data on quality procedures to continuously improve plant targets using the 4M process
  • Maintain and repair laboratory machines as necessary and track spare parts
  • Train new line operators and engineers on quality issues
  • Promote the use of customer preferred techniques for continuous improvement such as Six-Sigma, Poka-Yoke (Error Proofing), and Measurement System Analysis
  • Provide quality information to customer service team
  • Communicate with regulatory agencies regarding compliance documentation or validation results
  • Recommend resolution of identified deviations from established product or process standards
  • Create, populate, or maintain databases for tracking validation activities, test results, or validated systems
  • Participate in internal or external training programs to maintain knowledge of validation principles, industry trends, or novel technologies
  • Maintain cleanliness at work-site in accordance with 5S3R Standards: Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain; Right Location, Right Quantity, Right Container
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field or equivalent, relevant experience
  • CFEI certification preferred
  • 1 to 3+ years of experience working in a manufacturing setting preferred
  • Laboratory or research experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of measurement and calibration
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Basic knowledge of electrical engineering
  • Strong knowledge of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), and Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA)
  • Knowledge of quality systems and Lean manufacturing
  • Knowledge of IATF 16949 and ISO 9000
  • Comfortable working independently and with others
