About the position

The Quality Technician II is responsible for monitoring product quality throughout the manufacturing process, conducting tests on samples, and ensuring compliance with industry specifications. This role involves preparing samples for testing, analyzing physical properties, and maintaining accurate documentation. The technician also performs routine maintenance on equipment and communicates findings to relevant teams.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors product throughout the manufacturing process and retrieves samples from the mill for testing.
  • Prepares samples for testing by sawing, cutting, grinding, straightening, gauge marking and labeling.
  • Examines and tests product samples using structured methodologies to ensure compliance with ASTM and CSRM specifications.
  • Determines sample physical properties including yield, tensile strength, elongation, reduction of area, internal flaws, dimensions, weight, brand, surface quality, straightness, grade changes and hardness.
  • Communicates findings to rolling mill crew, shipping crews and/or management.
  • Responds to crew requests for additional testing or inspection.
  • Maintains both electronic and paper documentation detailing product disposition and sends appropriate notifications.
  • Performs routine maintenance on machinery and equipment and ensures accuracy of dimensional measuring instruments.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in chemistry or physics or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of equipment, technologies, terminology, and practices related to metallurgy and quality control.
  • Knowledge and skill in laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude for routine calculations.
  • Ability to operate tools, equipment, hardware and software necessary for the position, including precision measuring instruments and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, to convey technical information to non-technical staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientation to follow procedures and maintain accurate records.
