About the position

Sprague is looking for a Quantitative Analysis Intern for Summer 2025. This position will support Sprague's Quant. Analysis and Portfolio Mgmt. team in the areas of developing quantitative analytics solutions and applications on a standalone and portfolio level for Sprague's energy business. Potential project areas would be supporting one or several BUs and departments like: Retail Natural Gas and Electricity, Refined Products, New Business Development, Renewable Energy, Terminal Operations. We are seeking upbeat and energetic candidates with excellent communication and collaboration skills, who thrive on challenges and are excited about the idea of working in a high growth, fast-paced organization in the energy sector. The intern will work with assigned supervisors / subject experts from the Quant. Analysis and Portfolio Mgmt. team and will interact with team members from other BUs and departments like Data and BI, BA, IT, Marketing, Risk, Supply, Finance, Treasury and other Sprague Energy teams as well as present project results and receive feedback from the management team. This position will be based out of Sprague's Portsmouth, NH office. A successful intern candidate can be exposed to and apply and develop skills in applied mathematics, quantitative finance and statistical analysis in areas like forecasting and optimizing energy assets and logistics, modeling various risk factors, portfolios risk-return, energy supply and demand, retail and wholesale products analytics, pricing and hedging, deal structuring for sales, supply, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Help develop energy asset optimization, pricing, and hedging models.
  • Assist in developing, calibrating, testing and deploying Monte Carlo simulation models and libraries.
  • Assist in testing and improving product risks pricing and hedging on standalone and portfolio level.
  • Help modeling customers' energy usage patterns, test, develop and improve load forecasting models.
  • Assist in creating and evaluating new product structures, pricing and hedging.
  • Help develop commodity markets analytics to leverage in asset and portfolio optimization.
  • Improve models and estimates for exchange clearing margin account interest costs.
  • Help test / calibrate / develop / improve / deploy various quantitative analytics, models and libraries.
  • Support the Quantitative analysis team in various projects as required by the business.

Requirements

  • Education: junior, senior or master's students pursuing degrees in Financial Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Actuary Science, Computational Finance, Operations Research, Applied Economics, or similar.
  • Passionate for applying quantitative skills in a business environment to create and drive business and customers insights, decisions, actions and added value.
  • Advanced programming and model deployment skills in languages like R, Python, MATLAB.
  • Data manipulation (SQL, Python, etc) and data modeling skills.
  • Some exposure to cloud computing, parallel computing, and machine learning applications in cloud environments like AWS will be a plus.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and conduct research as needed; see projects through to completion.
  • Strong interest in learning about the energy markets and as a potential career path.
  • Strong drive to learn and share knowledge with others, effective interpersonal skills, attention to details and accuracy, while able to see the bigger picture.
  • Very strong collaborative skills and teamwork oriented.
  • Aptitude for developing creative solutions and thinking outside the box.
  • Ability to remain positive and focused on finding solutions when facing various challenges.

  • Ability to cover various tasks from supporting coworkers with data preparation and modeling to independent deeper quantitative analysis and modeling work and results.
