About the position

The Substitute Teacher Aide position at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) involves providing academic support in the absence of full-time staff. This part-time role is essential for assisting students who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, or multidisabled, ensuring they receive the necessary support and care during their educational activities.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the classroom when AIDB staff member is absent.
• Provide physical assistance to wheelchair or physically disadvantaged students as needed.
• Work cooperatively with other school personnel to serve students.
• Handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
• Follow written and verbal instructions from supervising staff.

Requirements

• Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be physically able to perform job duties, including lifting up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Must adhere to confidentiality requirements and AIDB policies and procedures.
• Must remain awake and alert at all times.
• Must have a minimum sign language proficiency of Survival Plus.

• Experience working with individuals who are Deaf, Blind, or DeafBlind.
