About the position

ISO New England is the not-for-profit, independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England's ongoing transition to clean energy. The Planning Services Development and Solutions team in the Planning Services department of ISO New England plays a pivotal role in the organization's system planning function, dedicated to ensure that the region will meet its resource and energy adequacy needs efficiently as it transitions towards a reliable and clean-energy system. With the emergence of advanced technologies and evolving market structures in alignment with regulatory, environmental, and public policy goals, the demand and resource mix of the power system are undergoing major transformations. To integrate this new mix seamlessly into the power system, innovative solutions are vital. Our team focuses on developing groundbreaking techniques to model emerging technologies, collaborating with various departments to propose market design innovations, and conducting thorough analyses to assess resource and energy adequacy needs for the future system. We are seeking individuals with a strong background in power systems who are eager to join a dynamic team focused on power system design, simulation, and analytics. To prepare for and manage the grid of the future, ISO New England is growing! As such, our System Planning team will temporarily relocate to our Windsor campus effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support on the overall assessment of resource and energy adequacy of the New England power system
  • Research innovative modeling techniques to integrate emerging technologies both from a resource and demand standpoint into reliability assessments
  • Identify enhancements to the current resource adequacy model to align with evolving system conditions
  • Propose necessary market design changes, conduct simulation to quantify impacts, and lead stakeholder discussions regarding proposed changes, ensuring alignment of resources' accreditation with their reliability contribution
  • Identify enhancements and desirable functionalities for our existing resource and demand models, collaborating closely with vendors to implement these improvements
  • Evaluate and benchmark alternative tools to optimize our resource and/or energy adequacy models and assessments
  • Assess resource and energy adequacy needs of the expected future system in terms of timing and locations and provide regarding the effectiveness of various technologies in meeting these reliability needs
  • Provide technical and procedural leadership, coordination, and facilitation within the ISO and among external stakeholders (Market Participants, NEPOOL and ISO Committees, and other stakeholders)
  • Participate in collaborative efforts with regional and national committees, task forces, and working groups and inter-regional planning activities

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, statistics, or a related field. Master's preferred
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills, capable of manipulating extensive and intricate data to identify trends and correlations
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 5+ years of experience in power system planning and operation, especially in probabilistic resource and energy adequacy assessments and economic generation production simulations required to be considered at a Senior level.

Nice-to-haves

  • Direct modeling experience using GE MARS or similar reliability assessment tools
  • Proficiency in programming with Python or MATLAB
  • Familiarity with the power generation and transmission system, planning practices, real-time operational challenges, and system topology
