About the position

The R&D Electrical Engineer II at Cepheid is a hands-on interdisciplinary design engineer role focused on developing next-generation medical diagnostic instruments and lab automation systems. This position involves collaboration with a team of engineers from various disciplines to design and productize molecular diagnostic systems that will be commercialized as key products in Cepheid's portfolio. The role emphasizes integration of complex systems, qualification of subassemblies, and resolution of software/firmware issues, all aimed at improving patient outcomes through innovative diagnostic solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate electro-mechanical, electro-optic, and other integrated systems to optimize signal-to-noise ratio, fault tolerance, and system packaging.
  • Qualify subassemblies involving understanding of computer systems, peripherals, wireline and wireless communication, and analog/digital system design.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams to resolve software/firmware issues in diverse systems, focusing on signal conditioning and processing and thermal control.
  • Drive redesigns to resolve root-cause issues and collaborate with team members in verification, validation, and Change Order submission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 2+ years of experience, or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Biomedical Engineering with 1+ years of experience, or a PhD in Electrical Engineering or Bioengineering.
  • Proven product development and commercialization experience within a risk-control framework.
  • Experience with PCBA designs using Altium, PADS-VX, OrCAD/Allegro or equivalent tools.
  • Experience testing mixed signal embedded systems containing sensors and signal conditioning using op-amps or ADC/DAC.
  • Experience in data analysis using Matlab or Python.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in diagnostics, medical device, life sciences, or biotechnology industry.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory safety and EMC standards and test methods.
