About the position

The R&D Engineer 3/4 (Process Automation and Control) position at Los Alamos National Laboratory involves leading a team of automation specialists in the design, development, and implementation of advanced automation solutions for plutonium programs. The role emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and continuous improvement, with responsibilities varying based on the level of the position (R&D Engineer 3 or 4). The selected candidate will be instrumental in optimizing process efficiency and driving innovation within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of automation specialists in the design and implementation of automation solutions.
  • Conduct analysis of existing processes to identify areas for automation and improvement.
  • Design, develop, and implement automation solutions to optimize process efficiency.
  • Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and other automation hardware/software.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in process automation and controls.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to team members (for R&D Engineer 4).
  • Mentor early career engineers and foster a collaborative team culture (for R&D Engineer 4).
  • Engage in strategic planning to advance LANL's capabilities (for R&D Engineer 4).

Requirements

  • Expertise in PLC programming (Rockwell Automation, Siemens, or similar platforms) and HMI/SCADA systems.
  • Strong understanding of control systems theory, instrumentation, and process optimization.
  • Experience in design and implementation of control system hardware and field instruments.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, regulations, and best practices (e.g., ISA, ANSI, NEC).
  • Strong documentation skills and ability to document technical results formally.
  • Thorough knowledge in applying fundamental techniques and engineering best practices.
  • For R&D Engineer 4: Experience in project management of technical work, including defining work scope, schedules, and budgets.
  • For R&D Engineer 4: Proven track record of successfully leading cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of protocols such as Modbus, OPC, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Knowledge of industrial processes such as electrorefining, induction heating, or machining.
  • Experience with simulation software (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) for modeling control systems.
  • Experience with nuclear weapon system engineering within a Design or Production Agency.
  • Active Q Clearance.
