About the position

Together, we enable Bastian Solutions to provide our clients with world-class distribution and production solutions. The Embedded Systems Engineer III will work with a small state-of-the-art R&D team in Boise to bring new ideas to life that will help transform the material handling industry. They will utilize the latest technologies to integrate robotics into material handling systems for complex applications. This includes R&D and prototype development to successfully bring new products to market. The process involves understanding the customer's goals and objectives and developing engineered solutions to meet these goals.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering teams to come up with innovating new ideas and new technologies
  • Design architectures and schematics for successful embedded systems and robotics projects with regards to system functionality, customer satisfaction, schedule, time, and budget
  • Work with layout engineer to design PCB layouts
  • Work with contract manufacturers to produce PCBs for prototype and/or production quantities
  • Detail and perform PCB testing to ensure hardware meets design requirements
  • Mentor junior engineers in the PCB design process
  • Willing to take on robotic system electrical design challenges
  • Specify and select parts, evaluate their operation, and integrate them into the hardware design
  • Document functional specifications to support embedded systems projects
  • Provide input on schedule and plan that maintain JIRA project while communicating it with managers
  • Remain up to date on all industry trends and new research in order help train and develop team members
  • Cross collaboration outside of discipline to come up with innovating new ideas and new technologies
  • Introduce and present new technology concepts to the team
  • Track projects and report progress and issues to the engineering manager
  • Assist in resolving engineering issues as they arise by working closely with the engineering team, vendors, and the shop
  • Ensure we meet and exceed our customer's expectations through superior design and implementation
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner
  • Ability to prioritize individual tasks on your own based while understanding project priorities from a macro level
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable controls technologies or programs

Requirements

  • 5-8 years experience in a firmware engineer or embedded systems engineer position or equivalent position
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or related field
  • Knowledge of microcontrollers, PLCs, industrial robots, safety rated equipment, encoders, networking, circuits, AC/DC motors and motor controllers
  • Understanding of automated equipment and systems, panel design, firmware design, regulatory practices and schematics
  • PCB schematic and layout design experience through Altium or related software
  • Serial digital communication knowledge (UART, I2C, CAN, SPI, USB)
  • Test equipment (Oscilloscope, Multimeter, signal analyzers)
  • Experience in C/C++, Python, and other common development languages
  • Real-Time Operating System (RTOS)
  • Experience driving agile process for project pacing
  • Need demonstrated project management and time tracking management
  • Driving the team to learn and research new projects and technology
  • Background in a collaborative role with multiple disciplines
  • Ability to write thorough documentation for new software and processes
  • Ability to mentor and guide people to meet their goals
  • Aptitude for hands on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Must be eligible to work within the US without sponsorship

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with machine vision and material handling a plus
  • Some panel design experience, hands on and mechanical capabilities, controls project management experience
