About the position

The R&D Scientist II position at Becton Drive, Franklin Lakes, NJ, is a contract role focused on applied material and chemical sciences within the IDS R&D organization. The role involves delivering technical excellence, supporting product development, and conducting experiments related to blood collection devices. The scientist will work cross-functionally with various departments and mentor junior team members while adhering to Good Laboratory Practices.

Responsibilities

  • Support change to win activities by interacting with material suppliers and conducting feasibility studies.
  • Perform design verification and validation for blood collection devices.
  • Represent the R&D function as an Extended Team member in large technology and product development programs.
  • Design and execute experiments for development, verification, and evidence generation across assigned programs.
  • Document and build technical knowledge within assigned business areas and recommend solution concepts.
  • Drive product development work streams including Requirements Management, Design Verification, and Design Transfer to Manufacturing.
  • Ensure program success by collaborating with R&D Engineering, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs.
  • Participate in intellectual property growth by submitting patent applications and Invention Disclosure Records.
  • Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices and maintain laboratory settings and equipment functionality.
  • Mentor and train junior team members and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Travel as required to conferences, manufacturing sites, and customer visits.

Requirements

  • B.S.+ degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Minimum 2 years direct laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of polymer formulation, processing, and structure-property relationships.
  • Experience handling clinical specimens, particularly human blood, is desired.
  • Proficient with MS Office and experience with statistical analysis tools is desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong learning agility and self-motivated with a sense of urgency.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with blood borne pathogen safety training.
  • Experience in polymer processing and characterization.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly pay of $40 - $45 per hour.
  • Contract position with expected hours of 40 per week.
