About the position

The Research and Development MRI Hardware Engineer position at Yale University is a full-time role focused on advancing the field of MRI technology within a collaborative and innovative environment. Reporting to the Vice Chair for Research Affairs, the successful candidate will join a dynamic team of scientists and engineers at Yale's prestigious MR imaging center. This center is recognized for its interdisciplinary research and state-of-the-art MR equipment, which supports the development and application of MRI and MRS methodologies in biomedical research. The primary research focus is on creating novel low-cost MRI systems with clinical applications in areas such as spine, liver, cardiac, prostate, and breast imaging. In this role, the MRI Hardware Engineer will leverage their expertise in magnet and gradient design, construction, and manufacturing to lead the design and construction of spatial encoding gradients. This includes interfacing gradients with low noise amplifiers, implementing gradient measurement and correction schemes, and managing associated electronics. The position emphasizes creative problem-solving and collaboration, allowing the engineer to work closely with a team on the construction of a groundbreaking low-cost MRI device. Responsibilities

  • Develops and evaluates performance and reliability of test equipment.
  • Determines types and number of tests to be performed on equipment.
  • Recommends modifications to testing equipment and analyzes results.
  • Uses blueprints, sketches, and schematics for design and construction.
  • Instructs laboratory support staff in construction and modification techniques.
  • Develops time and cost estimates, material requirements, and methodology.
  • Orders materials and supplies necessary for projects.
  • Sets up and operates machinery, hand and power tools for fabrication and testing.
  • Oversees support staff as needed for project completion.
  • Performs additional functions incidental to research and development tasks.

Requirements

  • Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience with gradient coil design in MRI or related fields.
  • Experience with gradient coil construction and system integration including coiling systems and mechanical considerations.
  • Experience with gradient coil characterization and correction schemes.
  • Excellent team player with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in a team setting.
  • Proficient in integration of multiple design elements in completing a system application.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to keep on track and meet deadlines, providing feedback on processes to yield high productivity.
