About the position

The Radio Dispatcher Trainee position is designed to provide on-the-job training in emergency public safety operations, specifically in 9-1-1 call taking and radio dispatching. Trainees will learn to handle emergency situations requiring independent judgment and will be expected to complete a one-year probation period before being promoted to a Radio Dispatcher. The position is full-time, requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, with rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. The Emergency Communications Bureau operates 24/7 and is responsible for coordinating radio traffic and providing vital information to law enforcement agencies in Orange County.

Responsibilities

• Receive on-the-job training in 9-1-1 call taking and radio dispatching.
• Handle emergency situations requiring independent judgment.
• Dispatch public safety equipment in a coordinated manner.
• Prepare records and follow oral and written directions.
• Work under pressure and exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
• Elicit information from callers while typing information into a computer terminal.

Requirements

• Some knowledge of the cities, highways, and geography of Orange County.
• Ability to learn applicable rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to react quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
• Ability to handle a high volume of emergency calls with tact and good judgment.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience or training as an emergency communications operator or dispatcher.
