About the position

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking a Radon Program Summer Intern to assist in conducting statewide outreach to promote radon testing and mitigation across North Dakota. This position is grant funded, seasonal, and typically runs from mid-May through mid-August, but start dates are flexible. The intern will work closely with the NDDEQ Radon Program Coordinator to identify, compile, and create educational outreach materials, prepare materials for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) translation, staff educational booths, research and order test kits and continuous air monitors, assist with conducting radon testing, evaluate radon test results, and conduct follow-up testing in buildings with elevated radon levels. Some travel with overnight stays may be required, and transportation and per diem reimbursement will be provided by the department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the NDDEQ Radon Program Coordinator in conducting statewide outreach to promote radon testing and mitigation.
  • Identify, compile, and create educational outreach materials.
  • Prepare materials for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) translation.
  • Staff educational booths promoting radon testing and mitigation.
  • Research and order test kits and continuous air monitors.
  • Assist with conducting radon testing and evaluating radon test results.
  • Conduct follow-up testing in buildings initially showing elevated radon level results.
  • Assist in outreach and field visits.

Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be enrolled in a college or university or be a recent graduate majoring in environmental sciences, communications with a science or public health focus, geology, chemistry, or natural resource management with coursework in chemistry, biology, geology, ecology, or other related physical or natural science or scientific or public health communications.
  • Students with a special interest in public health communications and working with limited English proficient persons are encouraged to apply.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with computers, MS Word, and data management systems is preferred but not required.
