About the position

The Rail Signals and Communications Chief position is a Special Duty Assignment (SDA) available to current Metro Transit Division employees. This role involves overseeing the maintenance of railway signals and communications equipment, providing technical expertise, and fostering a culture of safety and customer service excellence within the Rail Division. The Chief will manage personnel, collaborate with various stakeholders, and ensure efficient operations of the light rail system, which is expanding significantly in the coming years.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the coordination, direction, and supervision of personnel responsible for maintaining railway signals and communications equipment.
  • Build and foster a culture of care within the Signals and Communication workgroup.
  • Supervise, develop, and direct the work of Rail Signal and Communications personnel.
  • Provide management support for the training of staff and manage employee performance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the Rail Division and with Sound Transit.
  • Plan, operate, and maintain Signals operation for the Rail Division.
  • Consult with engineering and safety staff in the development and implementation of maintenance programs.
  • Lead safety and security initiatives and coordinate safety committees.
  • Respond to emergency situations and prioritize emergency maintenance tasks.
  • Act as Project Manager for various projects and contracts.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity in a related field.
  • Two years of experience performing railway signaling and communications maintenance, repair, or installation, preferably on transit systems.
  • Strong motivation to manage a diverse employee team and promote a culture of care and inclusion.
  • Experience with APTA, FRA, FTA, and AREMA standards and best practices.
  • Experience in analyzing and diagnosing malfunctions in electrical and electronic railway equipment.
  • Knowledge of maintaining and troubleshooting mechanical and hydraulic equipment.
  • Skill in planning, scheduling, prioritizing, and organizing maintenance functions.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage a highly unionized workforce and build strong relationships with Union partners.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience using computer software such as Microsoft Office and Enterprise Asset Management Systems.
