About the position
The Range Livestock Herder position is a temporary, full-time role focused on the care and management of livestock in various range locations in Summit and Morgan Counties, Utah. The role requires the herder to be available 24/7, performing a variety of tasks related to livestock production, health monitoring, and environmental management. The position is seasonal, with employment expected from February 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025.
Responsibilities
- Administer medication to livestock as needed.
- Apply medications to cuts and bruises on animals.
- Assist with irrigating forage and loading/unloading livestock according to shipping schedules.
- Sort and cut culls, and assist with weed control in grazing areas.
- Attend to pregnant livestock and newborn offspring, including night checks.
- Brand, tag, clip, or otherwise mark young animals for identification purposes.
- Build and maintain fences and facilities for animal safety and health.
- Examine animals for diseases and injuries, ensuring they receive adequate care.
- Feed and water livestock, ensuring they have access to fresh water and supplemental rations.
- Monitor animals for weight gain, health problems, and birthing issues.
- Move livestock to appropriate grazing areas and monitor for poisonous plants.
- Keep accurate records of new offspring and report any health concerns to the rancher.
Requirements
- Minimum of six months experience tending livestock.
- Working knowledge of farm machinery and livestock nutrition.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
