About the position

The Range Livestock Herder position involves caring for livestock in various range locations in Ely, NV. The role is temporary, lasting from March 1, 2025, to November 30, 2025, and requires the herder to work independently or in small groups in isolated areas. Responsibilities include monitoring livestock health, administering medications, and ensuring the safety and well-being of animals in extreme weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Administer medication to livestock as needed.
• Assist with loading and unloading livestock according to shipping schedules.
• Monitor and care for pregnant livestock and newborn offspring, including night checks.
• Identify and treat health issues in livestock, including administering appropriate medications.
• Maintain accurate records of livestock births and health status.
• Repair and maintain fences and facilities to ensure animal safety.
• Feed and water livestock and ensure adequate provisions are available.
• Guard against predatory animals and prevent livestock from consuming poisonous plants.
• Assist with weed control on grazing areas.
• Move livestock to appropriate grazing areas based on seasonal needs.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Six months of prior experience in livestock handling or related work.
• Ability to lift up to 80 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures and various weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with farm machinery such as tractors, UTVs, and ATVs.
• Knowledge of livestock health monitoring and care practices.
