About the position

The Range Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring safety protocols are followed during training events at military ranges. This role involves conducting inspections, providing training, and coordinating with various personnel to maintain safe operations. The specialist will also handle incident reports and assist in the development of safety-related course materials.

Responsibilities

  • Make recommendations to resolve range and safety conflicts for range requests not covered by the installation range SOPs.
  • Conduct a semiannual review of RFMSS facility-to-facility conflicts, facility-to-event conflicts, facility-to-ammunition conflicts, and facility-to-environment conflicts.
  • Review all updates to Installation Range SOPs and recommend changes in RFMSS administration tables.
  • Develop a range safety inspection schedule and deliver it to the Range Safety Officer for approval.
  • Inspect ranges for safety violations and verify compliance with installation range SOPs.
  • Deliver range incident reports from RFMSS ad-hoc reports module.
  • Support the production of courseware and curriculum materials focusing on range safety and laser safety.
  • Provide training and certification for Range Safety Officers and Officers in Charge.
  • Supervise normal functions of the range and training areas, including access control and monitoring.
  • Assist the Range Control Officer with supervising Range Safety Specialists.
  • Coordinate with various personnel for scheduling conflicts involving ranges and training areas.
  • Enforce Range Regulations and Marine Corps Orders for personnel training on ranges.
  • Provide range briefs, laser briefs, and inspections on all ranges and training areas.
  • Respond to training accidents and act as a liaison between first responders and range control.
  • Coordinate firefighting support during range and training area fires.
  • Assist in safety inspections with Industrial Hygiene, Base Safety, and the Fire Marshall.
  • Perform Operational Risk Management (ORM) assessments for ranges and training events.
  • Attend RCF-related training as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of Range Safety distance learning course (MarineNet).
  • Graduate of the RFMSS Functional Administrator course.
  • Graduate of the Inter-Service Range Safety Course.
  • Graduate of the Range Manager Tool Kit (RMTK) course.
  • Three years of Range Safety experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate of the Weapons Danger Zone (WDZ) Course.
  • Graduate of the Range Airspace Manager Course.
