About the position

The Ranger I position at the Massachusetts State House is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment through public safety, emergency response, and visitor services. Rangers provide a visible uniformed presence, conduct security screenings, and offer information about the cultural history of the State House. This role operates during the night shift from 11 PM to 7 AM and involves various responsibilities related to access control, safety, security, enforcement, and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and verify employee identifications entering the Massachusetts State House.
  • Perform security screening of visitors and items entering the Massachusetts State House.
  • Operate security screening technology such as portable and fixed magnetometers and x-ray machines.
  • Monitor and operate facility systems including remote door access controls and fire alarm panels.
  • Conduct patrols of the Massachusetts State House or staff fixed security posts as necessary.
  • Provide a public presence to deter criminal activity and rule violations.
  • Conduct crowd control in areas with large gatherings.
  • Control vehicular and pedestrian traffic to promote public safety.
  • Detect and respond to suspicious activity and report it to supervisors and law enforcement.
  • Respond to emergencies and render aid as necessary.
  • Enforce State House building rules and issue non-criminal parking citations.
  • Interact with the public, give directions, and respond to inquiries.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in park or resource management, environmental education, or natural/cultural history interpretation.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Possession of a current and valid CPR certificate from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Possession of a current and valid standard first aid and personal safety certificate.

  • Experience in security or law enforcement roles.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
