About the position

The City of Escondido is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual for the part-time, temporary position of Ranger Specialist within the Lakes/Open Space Division. This role is essential for maintaining the quality and safety of the city's parks and lakes facilities. The Ranger Specialist will be responsible for patrolling city parks and lakes, enforcing city ordinances and park regulations, and ensuring a positive experience for park visitors. This position requires a commitment to providing top-quality municipal services in a vibrant North County location. Key responsibilities include conducting regular patrols of city parks and lakes in a city vehicle, preparing and delivering oral presentations to park visitors and community groups, and documenting incidents and daily activities through written reports. The Ranger Specialist will also be responsible for opening and closing park facilities, collecting and depositing fees, and performing general maintenance and repairs on park and camping facilities, including boat docks, fishing piers, trails, and restrooms. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong teamwork skills, the ability to work under supervision, and effective communication skills with the public and co-workers. Candidates must be prepared to work in various weather conditions and be available for weekend and holiday shifts, as well as late-night hours, up to 1:00 a.m. This position is limited to 1,500 hours per fiscal year and requires the completion of specific training within nine months of appointment, including P.C. 832 and First Aid training. The starting salary for this position ranges from $22.09 to $29.61 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols City parks and lakes facilities in a City vehicle, enforces City ordinances and park regulations.
  • Prepares and makes oral presentations to park visitors and community groups as required.
  • Prepares written reports on incidents, accidents, and daily logs and activity reports.
  • Opens and closes lakes and parks facilities and collects and deposits fees.
  • Performs general maintenance, cleaning, repair and improvement on all lake-related park and camping facilities and equipment.

Requirements

  • An AA degree in parks and recreation management or related discipline, or equivalent experience in park operations.
  • Satisfactory completion of P. C. 832 and First Aid training within nine months of appointment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and contribute to a successful team effort.
  • Ability to work well under direct and indirect supervision.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and co-workers both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in park operations or related fields.
