The Recovery Support Specialist position is a full-time role within the Community Support Program located in Manchester, CT. This program is designed to assist individuals with serious mental illness in living independently. Community Support Specialists play a crucial role in helping clients learn the skills necessary for independent living, accessing community resources, and coordinating care with various providers. They also assist clients in managing their finances and achieving their recovery goals. The position requires a compassionate approach, as specialists serve as advocates for their clients, ensuring they receive appropriate clinical services and housing benefits. The role may involve working closely with state acute care facilities and general hospitals as needed, and the support provided can be either time-limited or long-term based on the client's needs. The Recovery Support Specialist will assist clients in identifying and advocating for their own recovery goals, utilizing motivational interventions to strengthen their recovery strategies. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, creating individualized treatment plans, teaching necessary skills, providing crisis intervention, and connecting clients to prosocial activities. The specialist will also participate in efforts to reduce healthcare disparities by screening for social determinants of health and linking clients to necessary resources. Documentation must be maintained in compliance with agency standards, and participation in staff meetings and training is required. The role may also involve transporting clients as needed. This position is ideal for individuals with lived experience in recovery from mental health or substance use conditions, as it emphasizes the importance of personal experience in supporting others on their recovery journey. The Recovery Support Specialist will be part of a dynamic team dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for both clients and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assists clients in identifying and advocating their own recovery goals.
  • Utilizes appropriate program models, including motivational interventions to strengthen recovery strategies.
  • Conducts program-specific assessments and screens as indicated.
  • Collaborates with clients to create individualized and person-centered treatment plans.
  • Conducts skills teaching to assist clients as needed.
  • Provides crisis intervention or de-escalation as needed.
  • Provides case management services.
  • Works closely with the client's natural supports and treatment teams.
  • Connects clients to prosocial activities.
  • Participates in interventions to help reduce health care disparities, including screening for Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
  • Maintains documentation in compliance with agency and program standards.
  • Participates in staff meetings, supervision, training, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Transports clients as required by the program.

Requirements

  • Lived experience establishing and maintaining recovery from mental health or substance use conditions.
  • 2+ years working with identified populations, specifically as a Recovery Support Specialist preferred.
  • Self-identifies as an individual with mental health and/or substance use disorder in long-term recovery.
  • Recovery Support Specialist Certification from Advocacy Unlimited, Recovery Coach Certification from CCAR, or an equivalent certification required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
