About the position

The Recreation Assistant position at the Department of the Air Force is primarily focused on supporting the installation Fitness Assessment Cell. This role is crucial in providing comprehensive health and fitness evaluations to the local active duty population assigned to base level installations. The overarching goal is to centralize and standardize fitness testing requirements and fitness improvement programs in alignment with the U.S. Air Force Fitness Program. The position is full-time and permanent, with a salary range of $36,209 to $45,982 per year, classified under the GS-4 pay scale. The role is located at Maxwell AFB, AL, and does not offer remote work or telework options. As a Recreation Assistant, you will be responsible for administering bi-annual fitness assessments for military personnel, ensuring that fitness assessment equipment is procured, maintained, and replaced as necessary. You will also utilize word processing equipment to generate various documents and initiate administrative procedures for members identified as not meeting fitness standards. This position requires a strong understanding of exercise physiology and the ability to conduct physical fitness evaluations according to Air Force guidelines. Additionally, you will be expected to maintain certifications in standard first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The role may occasionally require working outside of normal duty hours and involves a drug testing requirement, as it is a designated position subject to random testing for drug use. The incumbent must also complete a pre-employment physical examination. This position is open to various eligible candidates, including current and former federal employees, military spouses, and individuals with disabilities, among others.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Males must be registered for Selective Service.
  • General experience of at least six months in any type of work demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the position.
  • Specialized experience of at least six months at the GS-03 level or equivalent, including assisting with basic physical assessment measurements and inspecting fitness equipment.
  • Successful completion of 2 years of study including at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education).
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise techniques to conduct physical fitness evaluations in accordance with Air Force guidance.
  • Knowledge of various office automation software programs to support office operations and produce documents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in organizing and administering recreation activities.
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Basic Life Support/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/BLS/AED).
