About the position

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Recreation Coordinator (Special Populations) at the Parks Administration Offices. This role is essential in organizing, teaching, and supervising various specialized recreation groups across different parks and settings. The Recreation Coordinator will work under close to general supervision, following established procedures while having the autonomy to determine how and when to complete tasks. The position requires a commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants, ensuring that recreational activities are conducted smoothly and effectively. In this role, the Recreation Coordinator will assist in the planning, development, organization, and implementation of a variety of recreation and leisure programs tailored for special populations. This includes coordinating special events and ensuring that all equipment is set up appropriately. The Coordinator will also be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and safety in recreation areas, acting as a lead worker in the absence of a supervisor, and managing subordinate staff and volunteers. The position involves clerical duties such as maintaining participant files, answering inquiries, and managing program schedules and evaluations. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, the ability to build cooperative relationships within the community, and a passion for promoting recreational activities. The role may require working a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the needs of the community and the programs offered. Additionally, the Recreation Coordinator will be involved in community outreach efforts, utilizing social media and other promotional materials to engage the public and encourage participation in recreational activities.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes, teaches, and supervises various specialized recreation groups in parks and settings.
  • Assists with the planning, development, organizing, and implementation of recreation and leisure programs for various population groups.
  • Implements equipment setup for special events.
  • Maintains a safe and enjoyable experience for all staff and visitors by providing superior customer service.
  • Handles patron-related issues and explains rules, regulations, and fees during recreational activities.
  • Assists with opening and closing duties, ensuring cleanliness and upkeep of recreation areas.
  • Acts as lead worker in the absence of a supervisor at assigned programs/events.
  • Assigns tasks to subordinate staff and/or volunteers based on area assignment.
  • Performs clerical duties including maintaining participant and volunteer files, answering phones, and making reservations.
  • Maintains operational reports related to program schedules and evaluations.
  • Develops and assists with training and instruction of program staff and/or volunteers.
  • Assists with inventory management and budget recommendations for programming materials.
  • Provides community outreach and promotes recreational activities through various channels.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited college or university (or equivalent experience).
  • Six months of experience in recreation, athletics, or closely related field.
  • Valid Florida Class E Driver's License.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, therapeutic recreation, adapted physical education, special education, or closely related field.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
  • Certification in special populations related to recreation or physical education.
  • Two or more years of experience coordinating recreation programs for special populations.
  • Ability to speak foreign languages (Spanish, French/Creole).
