About the position

The Tustin Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to fostering community through its parks, programs, and people. Recognized for its excellence, the department has received the California Park & Recreation Society's District 10 Hall of Fame Award, which honors outstanding facilities and programs that significantly impact the community. The department is currently seeking motivated and reliable individuals for the part-time role of Recreation Facilities Assistant. This position is essential in ensuring that facilities are prepared for various events and activities, contributing to the overall success of community engagement initiatives. As a Recreation Facilities Assistant, the primary responsibilities include setting up facilities for meetings, recreation classes, and special events. This role also involves performing maintenance duties across various city locations, including the Community Center, Family and Youth Center, Recreation Center, Senior Center, and City Hall. Given the nature of the job, frequent interaction with the public, including children, teenagers, and senior citizens, is expected. Therefore, the ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to represent the City positively while engaging with community members. The recruitment process for this position involves a thorough review of application materials to identify qualified candidates. Those selected may participate in a recorded video interview, followed by a panel interview for the top candidates. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligible list for current and future vacancies, as this recruitment is conducted continuously to meet the City’s staffing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Moves and arranges tables, chairs, fitness equipment, and heavy objects to set up City facilities for scheduled recreation classes, City Council meetings, and other scheduled events; sets up audio-video equipment.
  • Opens facilities by unlocking doors, and turning on lights, security system, and air conditioning; secures facilities after use by ensuring doors and equipment are locked and turned off.
  • Monitors facilities for safety hazards; cleans up spills and clears walkways and doorways of obstructions.
  • Provides customer service to facility patrons by answering questions and providing information regarding facilities and recreation programs.
  • Assists with operation of special events such as Tustin Tiller Days and the Street Fair & Chili Cookoff; sets up and takes down booths and tables; delivers supplies and equipment; monitors event to ensure area is free of debris and safety hazards.
  • Assists with the maintenance of facility interiors by emptying trash receptacles and spot cleaning floors, windows, counters, sinks, furniture, and walls on an as-needed basis using a vacuum, mop, broom, and other cleaning equipment.
  • Assists with the maintenance of facility exteriors on an as-needed basis using a leaf blower, power washer, broom, and related tools.
  • Performs light maintenance duties such as replacing light bulbs, painting, patching walls, and performing minor repairs; reports serious maintenance issues to supervisor.
  • Travels to and from various City facilities in a safe and timely manner by driving a City vehicle.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school; and one (1) year of experience working in a position that involved extensive customer service or public interaction.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination and administrative screening.
