About the position

The Recreation Leader II position is a part-time role within the City of Pico Rivera's Parks and Recreation Department, designed to assist supervisory and management staff in executing various recreation programs. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the community enjoys a wide range of recreational activities and facilities. The ideal candidate will be flexible and willing to assist across all program areas, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships with participants, peers, and the public. The position requires working up to 28 hours per week, with a schedule that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the needs of the department. The Recreation Leader II will be responsible for planning, preparing, promoting, and conducting recreation programs and activities, ensuring a positive experience for all participants. This role is essential in maintaining the quality and safety of the facilities and programs offered by the department, which includes overseeing the use of parks, athletic fields, and other recreational amenities.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, promote and conduct recreation programs and activities.
  • Prepare signs and flyers for recreation events.
  • Supervise recreation facilities and their use.
  • Plan and direct youth arts and crafts programs.
  • Form and coach boys' and girls' sports teams.
  • Display and promote good customer service skills with co-workers, parents, students, and the general public.
  • Enforce departmental policies governing public safety and quality service.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Availability to work varied shifts including nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. of weight.
  • Ability to understand community values, traditions, hierarchy structures and roles.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and enforce safety rules.
  • Ability to handle challenging customer service situations.
  • Display strong and professional customer service skills.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent; coursework in college is desired.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of recreation experience working with the public; leadership experience is desired.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to speak Spanish is desired.
