About the position

The Recreation Management Specialist position within the Department of Agriculture is responsible for planning, programming, and executing work plans and projects related to wilderness, recreation, trails, special uses, and other related programs. This role involves overseeing budgets, analyzing the effects of recreation activities on natural resources, and ensuring compliance with agency guidelines. The position is located on a Forest Service unit and is open to multiple vacancies throughout Region 4.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the unit's wilderness, recreation, trails, special uses, and related programs budget.
  • Project the cost of each program based on staffing, equipment, and supply needs.
  • Develop and review proposals for new projects or revisions of existing plans.
  • Analyze and determine the effects of proposed recreation activities on natural resources and prepare environmental assessments.
  • Develop annual and long-range management plans in compliance with agency guidelines.
  • Review and synthesize complex permit applications and prepare draft/final/modified permits and public notices.
  • Ensure planning milestones are accomplished and regulations are adhered to, making changes as necessary.
  • Review existing data for accuracy and maintain a current inventory of resources.
  • Perform supervisory duties less than 20% of the time.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Specialized experience for GS-09: One year equivalent to GS-07, including participation in surveys and studies of wilderness areas, processing special use applications, or inspecting wilderness and recreation special uses.
  • Specialized experience for GS-11: One year equivalent to GS-09, including providing program input into natural resources management planning processes and communicating agency management practices to the public.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree for GS-09.
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree for GS-11.
