The department is currently seeking motivated individuals for the part-time role of Recreation Program Assistant. This position is ideal for those who wish to leverage their leadership skills and creativity to enhance community experiences at various parks and facilities. As a Recreation Program Assistant, you will be involved in a diverse range of activities that contribute to the planning, development, and execution of recreation programs and special events. This role requires a proactive approach to implementing activities such as dances, luncheons, games, and sporting events. You will also be responsible for preparing promotional materials to advertise these events, ensuring that the community is well-informed and engaged. In addition to event planning, the Recreation Program Assistant will monitor daily operations at recreation facilities, ensuring that all activities run smoothly and that staff adhere to established rules and procedures. You will assist with participant registration for classes and sports programs, manage facility bookings, and handle financial transactions related to these activities. Providing excellent customer service to facility patrons and the general public is a key aspect of this role, as you will be the first point of contact for inquiries about programs and services. The position also involves evaluating programs and events, making recommendations for improvements, and providing leadership to Recreation Leaders and volunteers. This is a dynamic role that requires flexibility, as hours may vary significantly from week to week, and you may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. This part-time, at-will position limits employees to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year, allowing for a diverse and engaging work experience within the community.

Responsibilities

  • Assist a Recreation Coordinator with planning, developing, and organizing recreation programs and special events.
  • Implement specific recreation activities such as dances, luncheons, games, and sporting events; plan event activities and assign staff to required duties.
  • Prepare promotional materials for scheduled events, including brochures, posters, advertisements, and flyers.
  • Monitor the daily operations and activities of a recreation facility; ensure rules and procedures are followed by patrons.
  • Prepare equipment, fields, and facilities for assigned activities.
  • Assist with registering participants in classes and sports programs and booking facilities for events; collect and process fees; maintain files and records of transactions and schedules.
  • Provide assistance to facility patrons and the general public; answer questions regarding facility usage and program specifics; respond to requests for human services needs and refer patrons to appropriate resources.
  • Evaluate assigned programs, activities, and special events; make recommendations for improvements and new programs and services.
  • Provide lead supervision to Recreation Leaders and volunteers; train new employees on work procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • One (1) year of paid or volunteer recreation experience in the area of assignment.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certificates required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination, and administrative screening.

  • Bilingual skills are desirable.
