About the position

The Recreation Specialist at the Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center is responsible for supporting a federally-funded residential training program aimed at providing career-ready technical and academic training to youth aged 16-24. This role involves planning, implementing, and coordinating recreational activities while ensuring compliance with Department of Labor and center guidelines. The specialist acts as a mentor, promotes safety, and facilitates the development of positive social skills among students.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and direct students engaged in recreational activities in compliance with DOL and center directives.
  • Assist students in adjusting to center life through supervision and behavior modification.
  • Plan, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive recreation program according to guidelines.
  • Organize and supervise student participation in various recreational activities.
  • Promote recreational activities that encourage independent living and teamwork.
  • Facilitate recreational classes and activities.
  • Conduct and track water safety training for students as assigned.
  • Maintain accountability of students and property, adhering to safety practices.
  • Ensure the recreation center is clean, safe, and in good repair.
  • Document relevant information in logs and other forms as required.
  • Provide Independent Living Program training and Career Success Standards training to students.
  • Evaluate student progress and complete evaluations every 60 days.
  • Plan physical education programs to develop students' physical attributes and social skills.
  • Organize and lead indoor and outdoor games and sports activities.
  • Select, store, order, and inventory equipment and supplies for the physical education program.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
  • Two to four years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Valid Teacher Certification in the state of employment.
