About the position

The Recreational Therapist at The Center for Discovery Children's Specialty Hospital is responsible for creating and implementing engaging social, recreational, and leisure activities for individuals with developmental disabilities. This role is essential for enhancing the well-being and health of clients through stimulating experiences tailored to their needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a planned program of purposeful, goal-based activities tailored to the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Develop structured activities with identified methodologies and measurable outcomes
  • Provide recreational therapy services as part of a comprehensive care approach
  • Work primarily during afternoon and evening hours, with availability during weekends and holidays to cover the majority of clients' waking hours
  • Collaborate with other professionals to ensure integrated care and support for clients
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of client progress and program outcomes
  • Adhere to all relevant organizational policies and regulatory requirements

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited college or university
  • Master's degree in Recreation with one year of full-time professional work experience in therapeutic recreation
  • Master's degree in a field allied to therapeutic recreation with two years of full-time professional work experience in therapeutic recreation
  • Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation with three years of full-time professional work experience in therapeutic recreation
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation with four years of professional work experience in therapeutic recreation under the supervision of a qualified recreation therapist
  • Bachelor's degree in a field allied to therapeutic recreation (e.g., physical education, art, music, or dance therapy) with five years of full-time experience in recreation programs for people with developmental disabilities under the supervision of a qualified recreation therapist
  • Specialized training or one year of professional experience working with people with developmental disabilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work flexibly, including afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Demonstrated creativity and adaptability in activity planning and implementation
  • Commitment to promoting the well-being and independence of individuals with developmental disabilities
